Google initially promised three years of major OS updates for the Pixel 6 series, Pixel 7 series, and Pixel Fold. However, the company has now improved its update policy by extending support for two more years. These smartphones will now receive five years of OS updates.
Google introduced its in-house Tensor chipset with the Pixel 6 series. With the extended update policy:
- Pixel 6 series will receive OS updates up to Android 17.
- Pixel 7 series and Pixel Fold will get updates up to Android 18.

Devices Covered Under the New Policy
The following devices are included in Google’s new update policy, receiving two additional years of updates:
- Pixel 7 Pro
- Pixel 7
- Pixel 7a
- Pixel 6 Pro
- Pixel 6
- Pixel 6a
- Pixel Fold
Pixel Tablet and Older Models
However, the Pixel Tablet will follow the original policy of three years of OS updates and five years of security updates. For clarity, Pixel 8 and Pixel 9 series smartphones will receive an impressive 7 years of OS updates. However, any Pixel phones released before the Pixel 6 will no longer receive Android or security updates.
Google’s decision to extend OS updates ensures better longevity for Pixel devices, giving users access to the latest features and improved security for years to come.
